Primitive Skills Day Hike with Natural Shelter, Food and Water Procurement

Primitive Skills Day Hike with Natural Shelter, Food and Water Procurement

In this video I take a day out and practice my primitive skills with gathering wild edibles such as Sassafras, Wood Sorrel and Greenbrier to name a few. I make a primitive minnow trap and capture a crawdad. These would be able to feed me if I was in a survival situation. I also find a all natural shelter within a rock overhang and a downed tree. This type of shelter did not take any time or energy to make and would keep me dry, warm and out of the wind. I was able to make a friction fire with a hand drill set and would then be able to procure water and cook food. The hand drill is Yucca stalk and basswood hearth board. For a container I boil water in an all natural container. Making a container with all natural resources is difficult and takes a lot of time. If you can find a natural container and stone boil in it that will save you time and energy. This method works when you have a smaller natural container. If your container is to large it will be harder to bring the water to a full boil. Within the Eastern woodlands there are many resource you can utilize if you know what your looking for. Even though I do bring my pack on long hikes like this I love to practice my primitive skills and use nothing out of my pack, this not only keeps me humble but allows me the confidence to know I can survive and thrive in the woods with nothing but my clothes on my back.

Ferrocerium Rod Torture Test – 4DB Elite Ferro Rods

Ferrocerium Rod Torture Test – 4DB Elite Ferro Rods

We put our 4DB Elite Ferro Rod to the test with a series of grueling torture tests. This 7.79″x1/2″ Ferro Rod is exclusive to 4DB and can be purchased on our website link above. We put it through the testing to not only showcase it’s durability but also prove it is a piece of gear that can stand up to the harshness of nature. If you drop it, or your bag is dropped it will survive and continue to perform for you. If you drop it in your camp fire you will still have the time to find it and save it. These tough characteristics are crucial for any survival gear but for your fire starter they are paramount! Your fire starter is one of the main components of your gear and could save your life. Our unique testing proves our 4DB Ferro rods are not only efficient and great quality but they are also tough and rugged.
We throw it down the trail, throw it off a hill onto the rocks, drop it several times, put it through our conibear 110 and 220 traps to see if it would break and still it didn’t break! We then smacked it with a hammer and it did break after the 3rd hit. We finally put a torch to it and melted it to simulate a fall into a camp fire. It did melt after about 3-5 minutes. But you could retrieve it if you did actually drop it into the fire. After melting you can see the high amount of sparks that our ferro rods create. They are very much elite.
We tested our Elite Ferro Rod but our 5″x1/2″ Huge Ferro rods, linked below, are also of the same quality.

A Day in the Life of 4DB

A Day in the Life of 4DB

This a totally different video than what we have ever done and we filmed it to show all of our fans the day to day happenings around 4DB. We work really hard to bring all of our customers the very highest quality bushcraft and survival products as possible. We do this with a very minimal amount of space and equipment. We do all of our work by hand with almost no power tools.
I start off the day answering emails, comments and sharing in our social media sites which I have linked below. We film with our iphones and use home made tripods. I spend a lot of time on the phone throughout the day answering questions from our great customers. We believe this is an absolute necessity because our customers are the most important part of our business and deserve our time. We spend the rest of the day filling orders, making our products and running to the post office.
We do try to find the time to get out in the woods. This time we had to film some video and we made sure we got some AR shooting in at the same time!
We are very much family oriented and love our animals as well. I introduce you to our red fox lab named Gunny.
We are in the process of building our home on our land and I show you what will be our front yard. Our trappers cabin will have to be relocated. This land is very special to us because it is also where my wife and I were married.
I hope you enjoyed the vlog type video, showing you around the business and family here at 4DB.
We very much appreciate every one of your that watch our videos. Please like, share and subscribe.
Also be sure to connect with us on all of our social media links below.
We recently created a new 4 Directions Bushcraft Facebook group where everyone is welcome to go and share, teach, inspire and learn so we encourage you to visit and join with the link below. We occasionally do giveaways so you don’t want to miss those. We will be doing our next one when we reach 3,000 subscribers. Thank you!
